FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is MISLEADING.

A reverse image search conducted by The FactCheckHub traced the video to several earlier social media posts linking the incident to Sudan, not Nigeria.

The earliest versions of the footage were shared by Sudanese social media users before it began circulating among Nigerian accounts. In those original posts, the incident was consistently described as having occurred during the ongoing conflict in Kordofan, a region in central Sudan.

One Sudanese Facebook account, “This is Sudan”, shared the video with the caption:

“A mother was killed in front of her child on Sunday during the SAF and RSF confrontation in Kordofan.”

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) is the country’s regular military, while the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is a powerful paramilitary group. Since April 2023, the two forces have been engaged in a brutal conflict over control of the country following a power struggle between their leaders.

The war has displaced millions of people and caused tens of thousands of deaths, with regions such as North, South and West Kordofan witnessing intense fighting, civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

Another account, Juba Global News Network, similarly wrote:

“A mother was killed in front of her child during fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Kordofan. Just another day in a war that has turned homes into battlegrounds.”

The FactCheckHub found no credible evidence linking the viral video to any terrorist attack in Nigeria. Instead, available evidence consistently traces the footage to the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

VERDICT

The claim that the viral video shows a child trying to wake his mother after terrorists in Nigeria killed her is MISLEADING. Checks by The FactCheckHub traced the footage to earlier posts from Sudan, where it was linked to the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Kordofan.
