A claim circulating on X alleges that a Hisbah, a religious police force in Northern Nigeria, has directed every state in Nigeria to stop nightclub activities or face consequences under Sharia law.

The Hisbah is a religious police force established by state governments in various states in Northern Nigeria to enforce Sharia laws among Muslims.

The claim was shared by an X account, Bia Pulse, alongside a video featuring a screenshot of a news report published by Premium Times.

The post reads:

“Islamic Hisbah armed group warns every state in Nigeria to stop nightclubs or face the consequences under Sharia law. They are coming out clearer now. The Islamisation of Nigeria is the top agenda of the Fulanis.”

CLAIM

Katsina State Hisbah has ordered every state in Nigeria to stop nightclub activities or face consequences under Sharia law.

FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is FALSE.

The claim appears to have misrepresented a genuine report about a directive issued by the Katsina State Hisbah Board.

A Premium Times report published on 20 February 2025 reported that the Katsina State Hisbah Board banned nightclub activities within Katsina State, North-West Nigeria.

The report was titled, “Nigerian state bans nightclubs as Hisbah threatens tough actions.”

According to the report, the Katsina State Hisbah Commander-General, Aminu Usman, also known as Abu Ammar, announced the directive in a statement issued in Katsina.

The board directed nightclub operators in Katsina State to shut down their establishments, citing Islamic principles, the need to uphold moral values and security concerns. The report also stated that relevant security agencies in the state were informed to ensure compliance.

Other media organisations, including The Punch and The Guardian, also reported the directive in February 2025.

However, there is nothing in the Premium Times report or other reports reviewed by The FactCheckHub indicating that the Katsina State Hisbah Board ordered every state in Nigeria to ban nightclubs.

The directive was specifically issued by the Katsina State Hisbah Board and applied to Katsina State, not the entire country.

The claim also provides no evidence to support the assertion that the directive represented an attempt to “Islamise Nigeria” or that such an agenda was being pursued by the Fulani ethnic group. These are interpretations and allegations not supported by the reports on the Katsina directive.

VERDICT

The claim that the Katsina State Hisbah ordered every state in Nigeria to stop nightclub activities or face consequences under Sharia law is FALSE. The directive reported by Premium Times was issued by the Katsina State Hisbah Board and applied specifically to nightclub activities in Katsina State.
