A video circulating on social media claims to show a recent incident of police brutality involving two men dragging a firearm from a police operative.

The clip surfaced shortly after the killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, an alleged suspect, by an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Nuhu Usman, in Delta State on April 26, 2026—an incident that reignited conversations about police brutality in Nigeria.

An X user, @CrownprinceCom2, posted the video with the caption:

“Nigeria Police are on this one again. This is very disappointing. IGP must see this video and something must be done.”

As of May 1, 2026, the post had generated over 7,000 reposts and more than 10,000 likes.

THE FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is MISLEADING.

The video resurfaced amid renewed outrage over police conduct, with many users sharing past incidents to highlight ongoing concerns about law enforcement abuses.

However, checks by The FactCheckHub show that the footage is not recent.

A keyword search traced the video to September 2022, when it was widely reported by Nigerian media outlets, including Daily Trust.

According to the report, the incident occurred after a police officer allegedly seized phones from individuals and attempted to access their private messages, which provoked a confrontation. The individuals involved then tried to overpower and disarm the officer.

At the time, the then Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, described the incident as an assault on a police officer and an attempt to disarm him, noting that the suspects would be charged in court.

“it is a case of assault on a police officer and an attempt to disarm him. A civilian has no right to retaliate even if a policeman slaps him or her. What the person should do is to report any action against them to the police authorities,” he said, adding “the suspects will be charged to court accordingly.”

These reports confirm that the video predates the current incident and is unrelated to recent developments.

VERDICT

The claim that the video shows a recent incident of police brutality is MISLEADING. The footage dates back to September 2022 and is being recirculated out of context following a new incident.
