Old video of Borno military attack falsely shared as recent killing of Christians

A disturbing video showing multiple bodies lying on the ground is circulating online, with social media users claiming that the victims were Christians recently killed by Fulani Islamist groups in Nigeria.

The claim was shared on X on 8 September 2026, by an account identified as PSAFLIVE (@PSAFLive).

The post reads:

“NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS: Fulani Islamic groups are killing Nigeria Christians. Scores of people have killed in the past few days, the Islamic groups have beheaded others who refused to convert to Islam. Living in Nigeria has become an extreme sport for Nigerians, they must survive extreme poverty while running away from Islam groups.”

The post was accompanied by a video showing several bodies lying on the ground has generated over 300 reposts and more than 400 likes as of 8 September.

CLAIM

Video shows Christians recently killed by Fulani Islamic groups in Nigeria.

FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is MISLEADING.

The video being circulated as evidence of recent killings is not recent.

A search for the footage led to a Truth Nigeria report published on 5 June 2026, more than three months before the viral post was shared.

The report, titled “Boko Haram Attack Leaves 8 Soldiers Dead in Borno — Reports,” featured the same footage showing bodies lying on the ground and wrapped in blankets.

According to the report, the video showed the aftermath of an attack on a Nigerian military formation in Borno State.

The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of 5 June, when insurgents attacked a military base in Borno.

The incident was also reported by other media organisations. A Premium Times report published on 5 June reported that insurgents attacked a military base in Borno, with eight soldiers initially reported killed.

However, the Nigerian military later confirmed the attack but provided a different breakdown of the casualties. In a Premium Times report published on 6 June, the military said five soldiers and three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were killed during the attack on the Forward Operating Base in Mandaragirau, Borno State.

Therefore, contrary to the viral post’s suggestion that the footage shows people killed “in the past few days,” the video is linked to an incident that occurred on 5 June 2026.

Available reports indicate that the footage showed the aftermath of an attack on a Nigerian military base. There is no evidence that the bodies in the video were Christians killed for refusing to convert to Islam.

The claim also provides no evidence to support its attribution of the attack to “Fulani Islamic groups.”

VERDICT

The claim that the video shows a recent killing of Christians by Fulani Islamic groups in Nigeria is MISLEADING. It is footage from the aftermath of a 5 June 2026, attack on a military base in Borno State, months before the 8 September post was made. Reports indicate that soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force were among those killed in the attack.
