A claim that the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is disbursing campaign funds to the electorate in Lagos is circulating on WhatsApp.
Sanwo-Olu, who is the gubernatorial flag-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, is seeking for a re-election in the March 18 governorship election, holding in 28 out of the 36 States of the Nigerian federation (excluding the Federal Capital Territory).
The claim was contained in a broadcast message sent to various contacts in a WhatsApp group. The message asked eligible voters to redeem their campaign funds by clicking a link.
The broadcast message read:
Are You Eligible To Vote?
Claim your 20,000 Naira Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Campaign Funds
Babajide Sanwo-Olu is disbursing N20,000 campaign fund to eligible voter.
Findings by the FactCheckHub revealed that the claim is FALSE.
A careful look at the website link shows that the domain name has features synonymous with most phishing websites.
Whenever users click the web link, it doesn’t direct them to the official website of Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Rather it asks you to fill in personal details like your name and bank details. After which you’d be asked to share to groups and your phone contacts till a ‘green bar is full.’ This is a typical modus operandi of phishing websites and scams.
