Video does not show #freeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja

A claim that a video shows the protest scene from the #freeNnamdiKanu protest that took place in Abuja is circulating the internet.

The claim was made by a user on X @DrOzitababy on the app. The claim was contained in a video which is over a minute and accomapanied with a caption.

In the video, people could be seen running on the expressway with cars and motorists parked while an helicopter hovereed in the air

The caption read :

This is what Sowore single-handedly pulled in Abuja today in protest for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. Only haters of humanity will fault him or hate him for this. Free Nnamdi Kanu protest is a huge success today thanks@YeleSowore Na man you be. If they don’t release Nnamdi Kanu after this then today’s will be child’s play to what will happen when the indigenous people of Biafra will protest … it will be madness to madness..

Since the post inception on Monday, October 20 2025, it has garnered over 400,000 views, 3,500 likes and 1400 reposts.

The post was also seen here and here with significant traction.

The #freeNNamdiKanu protest was convened by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore to protest the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed group, IPOB. The protest took place on Monday 20 October in Abuja which grounded major activities.

THE FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is FALSE!

A close observation of the video suggets that it was originally posted on TikTok, as seen from the app’s watermark and the username displayed on it.

A search for the username @geramwai which was displayed on the video on TikTok showed that the original video was posted on Thursday, October 16, with the caption: “Captured the moment just outside our office… RIP Baba.”

Comments under the post mentioned Raila Odinga and Kenya, providing more context about the video’s origin.

Further verification showed a visible landmark in the footage a street pole with the inscription “The Standard Group” and a “KTN” on it. A keyword search confirmed that The Standard Group PLC is a Kenyan multimedia company, and KTN (Kenya Television Network) is its television broadcasting arm.

Additional findings revealed that Raila Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister, had indeed passed away in India, and his body arrived in Kenya on Thursday, October 16, the same day the video was posted.

THE VERDICT

The claim that the video shows the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja is false. The footage is actually from Kenya, capturing the moment when Raila Odinga’s body arrived in the country for burial.
