FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is FALSE.

To verify the claim, The FactCheckHub contacted OPay via X to clarify how its Fixed Savings product works and whether such returns are possible. The fintech explained that Fixed Savings is powered by OPay Microfinance Bank Limited and offers annual interest rates of up to 18 per cent, not daily interest.

Opay stated that users can lock funds for between 7 and 1,000 days, with interest calculated annually. Although interest may appear to accrue periodically, OPay clarified that its rates are tiered rather than flat.

According to the company, deposits of up to ₦300,000 earn between 15 per cent and 18 per cent annually. For amounts above ₦300,000, only the first ₦300,000 attracts the higher rate, while the remaining balance earns between 6 per cent and 9 per cent annually.

This means that if someone deposits ₦10 million, only a small portion of the money earns the higher rate.

Based on OPay’s structure, earning ₦10,000 every day would amount to ₦3.65 million in a year, which equals a 36.5 per cent annual return. This is more than double OPay’s stated maximum interest rate and does not reflect how its savings product actually works.

Simply put, for an investment of ₦10,000,000, the annual return at 15 per cent amounts to ₦1.5 million, which translates to about ₦4,110 per day when spread across 365 days, while at 18 per cent the annual gain rises to ₦1.8 million, equivalent to roughly ₦4,932 per day over the same period.

Therefore, while OPay users can earn interest by locking their funds, the suggestion that depositing ₦10 million guarantees ₦10,000 daily is inaccurate and overstates the potential returns.

VERDICT

The claim that OPay pays ₦10,000 in daily interest after locking ₦10 million is FALSE. OPay’s official clarification shows that a ₦10 million deposit does not guarantee such daily returns.
