CLAIM
Price of cooking gas has gone down from ₦1,400 to ₦1,000.
FINDINGS
Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is FALSE.

Since President Bola Tinubu took office in May 2023, the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has risen sharply, significantly adding to the cost-of-living pressures faced by many Nigerian households.
According to market reporting, retail prices jumped from around ₦700 per kg in mid-2023 roughly when Tinubu assumed power to around ₦1,400 per kg by late 2025, representing about 100 per cent increase.
Following the recent marginal appreciation of the naira, there have been reports that the prices of some commodities, including cooking gas, are beginning to decline. But has it come down to N1000 per kg ?
To verify the claim, The FactCheckHub conducted a comparison analysis by reaching out to gas sellers and consumers across different locations in Nigeria.

Market prices of cooking gas in Nigeria are not fixed nationally and often vary by location, transportation costs, and supplier pricing. As a result, price changes in some areas may not reflect a nationwide reduction.
Dan Ali Sacro, a gas seller in Kubwa, Abuja, debunked the claim, he stated: “A kg of gas now is ₦1,100, and that’s the fixed price anywhere around here.”
This contradicts the claim that cooking gas sells for ₦1,000.
Similarly, Maryam Umar, a student of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, Sokoto state, stated, “I filled three kg on the 29th of January for ₦3,540, which means a kg went for ₦1,180.”
Hassan, a gas seller in Ilorin, Kwara State, said the price has not significantly improved: “In Ogidi here, we still sell a kg of gas for ₦1,250.”
In Igbo-Elerin, Lagos, a customer, Tobi, also confirmed that he still purchased gas at a higher price recently:
“While there’s been a change in the price of gas, I still bought it for ₦1,200, two days ago.”
While these accounts indicate a slight reduction in cooking gas prices, none confirms ₦1,000 as the prevailing price as of February 2, 2026.
VERDICT
The claim that the price of cooking gas has dropped from ₦1,400 to ₦1,000 is FALSE. Although the price of cooking gas may have reduced in some areas, it has not dropped to ₦1,000 per kg as of the time of filing this report.
