FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the attributed quote is FALSE and completely fabricated.

An audio examination and full transcript review of the video attached to the quote reveals that Obi made no mention of Tinubu, nor did he state that he was unable to win an election or had intentions to quit.

Instead, the video captures Obi addressing Nigerians in diaspora, where he discussed governance reforms, systemic corruption, and diaspora support. In the recording, Obi was urging diaspora Nigerians to advocate for structural political change rather than merely sending money home to cover basic survival expenses for relatives.

The transcription of the audio says:

“I need you, I need you, that’s why I am having lunch with you today… This man came and what he said is the reality of our problem. So let’s deal with it. Now people at home who are begging you for money, tell them no. Tell them let’s put somebody who has proven…”

In the video, Obi discussed governance and public corruption, explaining how the misappropriation of public funds deprives communities of basic amenities such as hospitals and schools. However, he did not mention his chances of defeating Tinubu at the polls or claim that he was pressured by young supporters to contest the election.

Furthermore, Obi addressed the distortion of his remarks, clarifying his stance on diaspora contributions and refuting false interpretations.

“I never asked them to abandon their loved ones. My concern is that Nigeria should not remain a country where millions depend on relatives abroad for basic survival,” he wrote.

VERDICT

The claim that Peter Obi stated he cannot beat Tinubu and only ran because young people persuaded him is FALSE. Findings show that the quote was fabricated and superimposed onto a video where Obi was discussing governance reform, public corruption, and diaspora support.
