A VIRAL video circulating on social media claims that Nigeria’s vice president, Kashim Shettima, was busy recording videos on his mobile phone while US president Donald Trump listed his achievements at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) summit.
The footage shows Nigerian delegates seated in an official setting, while an unidentified person records the proceedings with a mobile device.
The claim made on 22 September 2026, was shared by a verified X user @LM_MessiRebirth, with the caption:
“Trump is listing his achievements in just two years at the UNGA summit, and our Vice President is busy making videos on his phone.”
As of 25 September 2026, the post has generated over 248,000 views, 1,600 likes, and more than 460 retweets, with several commenters hurling insults at the vice president over the allegation.

CLAIM

FINDINGS
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making body of the United Nations. It brings together representatives of all 193 UN Member States and serves as a forum for discussing a wide range of international issues covered by the UN Charter. Each member state has an equal vote in the Assembly.
The General Assembly holds its regular sessions from September to December each year, with additional meetings convened when necessary. During these sessions, member states consider issues under specific agenda items and sub-items, which may result in the adoption of resolutions.
The ICIR reported that Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st UNGA has been pursuing key economic and diplomatic priorities. During the summit, Shettima delivered president Bola Tinubu’s national address, pushing for bilateral trade, solid mineral investments, and education funding, including a critical-minerals agreement signed between Nigeria and the US.
The ICIR also reported that Nigeria used the UNGA platform to demand two permanent seats with veto powers and five non-permanent seats for Africa on the UN Security Council, with Shettima arguing that the council’s structure must reflect modern geopolitical realities.
A closer examination of the video by The FactCheckHub shows that the footage is being recorded by a person whose face is not visible. The person is holding a mobile phone and filming the proceedings from behind the camera.
As the recording continues, the camera is turned towards Shettima and Nigeria’s minister of foreign affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu. Odumegwu-Ojukwu is also seen holding a mobile phone and recording the proceedings.
The video therefore does not show Shettima recording the proceedings, as claimed.

VERDICT
The claim that vice president Kashim Shettima was recording on his mobile phone during a speech at UNGA is FALSE. A closer review of the footage shows that the face of the person filming is not visible, so their identity cannot be established from the video. However, the footage clearly shows that the person recording was not Shettima.
