False claim circulates that Fulani herdsmen attacked Aba power plant

AN online news blog, Igbo Times Magazine, has published a report with a claim that the Aba power plant located in Aba, Abia state was allegedly attacked and set on fire by some Fulani herdsmen.

The headline of the report published on March 2, 2024 read:

“Aba Power Plant Engulfed in Flames; Suspected Arson Attack by Fulani Herdsmen”

The Aba power plant is a 188-megawatt plant owned by Geometric Power Limited and commissioned by Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, on February 26, 2024.

The post has been circulated widely as seen here, here, and here on Facebook.

THE FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is FALSE.

Checks show that the owner of the power plant, Geometric Power Limited, has debunked the report as “fake news” via its Instagram handle: @geometricpower.

Further search online didn’t yield any result as our fact-checker found no credible media report regarding the alleged attack and arson on the power plant.
