THE FINDINGS

Investigations by The FactCheckHub reveal that the claim is MISLEADING.

Using Google Reverse Image Search, The FactCheckHub traced the image back to 2019, confirming it had circulated online well before the current assembly session. Earlier versions of the photo can be found here and here.

The man in the image is Chidozie Kennedy Ibe, who represented Obowo State Constituency in Imo. Elected in 2015, Ibe served as Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly from November 2021 to September 2022, after which he resigned but continued as a member of the House. He was re-elected in 2023, beginning his third term.

However, checks by The FactCheckHub show that Ibe is no longer the speaker of Imo State House of Assembly. The current speaker of the House is Chike Olemgbe, who was sworn in as the Speaker of the 10th Assembly in June 2023.  In addition the image was taken before Ibe was speaker.

VERDICT

The claim that the image shows the current speaker of Imo state House of Assembly commissioning a bet shop as a constituency project is MISLEADING, as findings showed that the image has been online since 2019.

Claim that video shows Hope Uzodinma absolving IPOB of insecurity is MISLEADING

0

A video circulating online claims that the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, has absolved the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of responsibility for the unrest and insecurity in the South-East.

The nearly two-minute clip, which has gained traction particularly on X and Facebook, features a split-screen format.

The top half appears to show an interview between Governor Uzodinma and Channels TV’s Seun Okinbaloye on Politics Today, while the bottom half depicts several men being interrogated and while alighting from a truck.

During the interview, Governor Uzodinma stated that the individuals responsible for the unrest in Imo State are hired from other states and falsely labeled as IPOB members. He emphasized that IPOB is not behind the insecurity in the South-East region.

The transcribed audio reads as follows:

…They hire hoodlums from outside Imo state, they bring them in pretending to be IPOB, they commit these crimes and run away so it is not about IPOB yes we agree we have aggrieved IPOB members but I can tell you, those who are doing these destruction most of them were brought from outside Imo state… As I speak to you, honest political leaders and religious leaders have approached me to encourage military to come around because these people have created fear int the citizens by their dastardly acts so it is not about the military, if anything, our people want the military around so they can have sense of security and go about their business without fear of any molestation…

The footage was posted on X @biafra_daily had a caption alongside that read:

THE FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub shows that the claim is MISLEADING!

Screenshot of an appearance of the claim as seen on X; INSERT Misleading verdict

A Google Reverse Image Search conducted on keyframes from the viral video returned result of an actual interview between Seun Okinbaloye and Governor Hope Uzodinma on Politics Today, as published on YouTube by Channels TV on April 7 2021.

In the actual footage, which runs for nearly an hour, the interview featuring Governor Hope Uzodinma begins at 32:48 and addresses several key issues, including fresh attacks on a correctional facility in Imo State. These attacks were initially attributed by the police to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its security wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Governor Uzodinma, however, refuted these claims, stating that aggrieved politicians were behind the attacks. He explained that these politically motivated assaults were intended to destabilise the state and undermine his administration. The police had initially accused IPOB and the ESN of being responsible for the attacks, which targeted both the correctional centre and a police command.

This version of events was corroborated by multiple media outlets, including Vanguard and Sahara Reporters, which reported that Governor Uzodinma claimed the attacks were orchestrated by political rivals aiming to weaken his support base within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the interview, Governor Hope Uzodinma specifically absolved the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) from responsibility for the attack on the correctional facility. He did not, however, comment on their responsibility on the broader issue of insecurity in the state.

Further findings reveals that, contrary to the claim that the circulating video was a recent breaking news development, the interview took place in 2021. A final point of contrast lies in the chyron design used in the videos.

The chyron design – electronically generated caption superimposed on the screen – used in the short clips circulating from the interview is brown and deep blue, however the recent chyron design of Politics Today is blue and white

THE VERDICT

The claim that a recent video shows Hope Uzodinma absolving IPOB of responsibility for insecurity in the South-East is misleading; the video dates back to 2021 and Uzodinma specifically absolved the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) from responsibility for the attack on the correctional facility. He did not, however, comment on their responsibility on the broader issue of insecurity in the state

Does Nigeria have low energy tariff in the world?

0

A claim that Nigeria enjoys low energy tariff in the world has surfaced online.

The claim was made by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu (1:37:20 – 1:38:10), in response to questions from journalists about debts owed to power generation companies (Gencos) during a press briefing held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the National Press Centre in Abuja.

During the televised briefing, Adelabu announced a 35 per cent reduction in electricity subsidies following recent tariff hikes for high-use consumers. He said this adjustment generated ₦700 billion in revenue and helped reduce the government’s financial burden.

READ: Do 150 million Nigerians have access to electricity?

Adelabu acknowledged ongoing challenges in the power sector, including grid instability, gas shortages, and a ₦4 trillion debt owed to power firms, half of which the government plans to address through budgetary support.

He emphasised that the government prioritises the welfare of Nigerians over the interests of electricity companies, striving to ensure both reliable and affordable power supply, especially for the poor. While recognising the global rise in energy costs, Adelabu stated that Nigeria still enjoys one of the lowest electricity tariffs in the world.

The minister also highlighted progress under the Siemens Power Initiative, including improved transmission capacity and a push toward renewable energy. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering consistent and affordable electricity to all Nigerians.

A portion of his statement, as transcribed from the briefing, reads:

…We can never be on the side of the companies, we are on the side of Nigerians you must ensure that they not only enjoy reliable electricity they enjoy affordable electricity but all said and done we still need to keep looking at the appropriateness of tariffs I’m telling you it affects me too it’s not as if I just want to increase tariff but we need to look at we must protect the poor but energy is expensive all over the world we all know after food security is energy security that most countries of the world are battling with and we still enjoy the lowest tariff in Nigeria today I must tell you…

Given the nature of this claim, The FactCheckHub investigated its accuracy.

CLAIM

Nigeria enjoys low energy tariff.

THE FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub shows that the claim is MOSTLY TRUE!

A 2024 BusinessDay report noted that despite the increase in electricity tariffs from ₦66 to ₦225 per kilowatt-hour, Nigeria remains one of the countries with the lowest electricity rates in West Africa.

Citing data from GlobalPetrolPrices.com, the report confirmed that even with a 240 per cent hike, Nigeria’s electricity costs remain among the most affordable in the region.

Countries such as Mali, Togo, Senegal, Ghana, and Ivory Coast reportedly pay more for electricity than Nigeria.

Additionally, a recent Statista report on global electricity prices shows that Nigeria ranks among the countries with the lowest tariffs worldwide.

However, countries like Qatar, Iran, and Russia have even cheaper rates, primarily due to their vast reserves of crude oil and natural gas, which subsidise domestic energy costs.

READ: Is Adeleke’s power plant the biggest in Nigeria?

This positions Nigeria in a relatively low-cost bracket globally, particularly when compared to countries without comparable energy resources.

THE VERDICT

The claim that Nigeria enjoys the lowest energy tariff in the world is Mostly True.
While Nigeria does not have the absolute lowest tariff, countries like Qatar, Iran, and Russia are cheaper, it remains among the most affordable both in West Africa and globally.

Do 150 million Nigerians have access to electricity?

THE Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has said that approximately 150 million Nigerians now have access to electricity.

Adelabu made this known on Thursday, April 17, during the 2025 Ministerial Sectoral Update Conference held in Abuja, where he spoke alongside the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi, and other key stakeholders.

“As it is today, Nigeria—a country with about 240 million people—has access for 150 million people already, while about 80 million lack access to adequate electricity in Nigeria.

“The real challenge lies in the stability and affordability of electricity. That’s how we measure reliability. We must ensure that those who have access enjoy consistent and affordable power,” he said.

The claim went viral online with many wondering over the accuracy of the claim due to challenge with access to electricity in Nigeria. This prompted The FactCheckHub to examine the claim.

CLAIM

150 million Nigerians have access to electricity.

THE FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is TRUE.

According to the Electricity 2025 report  by the International Energy Agency (IEA), Nigeria’s electricity access has grown significantly in recent years, reaching approximately 70 per cent of the population by the end of 2023. With the country’s population estimated at 230 million then, this implies that about 161 million Nigerians have access to electricity.

“An estimated 70 per cent of Nigerians had access to electricity in 2023, up from 50 per cent a decade ago…Electricity demand declined by around 6 per cent in 2024, but we forecast that it will increase on average by more than 5 per annually between 2025 and 2027,” the report stated.

The report highlights key dynamics that are reshaping the country’s power landscape, including persistent gas supply challenges and the rising contribution of renewables. It also outlines how new policies and infrastructure investments are influencing electricity generation, distribution, and access across the country.

READ ALSO : FACT CHECK: Has electricity generation worsened or improved since 2015? We verified

Similarly, the Energy Progress Report, which tracks progress on the Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7), indicates that 61 per cent of Nigeria’s 218 million people had electricity access as of 2022, amounting to about 133 million people. Additionally, World Bank data for 2023 shows that 61 per cent of 227.9 million Nigerians around 139 million people had access to electricity.

These estimates show a consistent upward trend in electrification across the country, driven by policy reforms, infrastructure expansion, and increased deployment of off-grid renewable solutions such as solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, particularly in rural areas.

VERDICT

The claim by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, that 150 million Nigerians now have access to electricity is TRUE, based on corroborating data from the IEA’s Electricity 2025 report, the World Bank, and the Energy Progress Report. Though estimates vary slightly, they all support the minister’s claim as being within a plausible range.

Photo showing Kwankwaso wearing Tinubu’s ‘trademark’ cap is photoshopped

AN image showing the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, Rabiu Kwankwaso, wearing a cap with an insignia associated with President Bola Tinubu, is circulating online.

The image is being shared alongside claims that Kwankwaso has defected from the NNPP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The viral claim emerged amid growing speculations over Kwankwaso’s political future following a leadership crisis within the NNPP.

Several users on X and Facebook shared the image suggesting Kwankwaso’s public alignment with President Tinubu.

An X user, @Onsogbu, posted the image with the caption:

“Kwankansiya now with Tinubu’s unbroken chain cap. Welcome Home sir! Life is simple.”

The post has garnered over 100 reposts and more than 700 likes as of April 16, 2025.

Similarly, a Facebook user, AMN, posted the picture with the caption:

“Kwankwaso Dumps NNPP to APC as he replaces Kwakwasiya Cap with Tinubu Cap.”

The image has been circulated widely across different platforms, such as here and here.

CLAIM

A photo shows Rabiu Kwankwaso recently wearing a cap bearing Tinubu’s ‘trademark’, indicating his defection to APC.

Photo: screenshot of the X post retrieved online inserted MISLEADING VERDICT

THE FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is MISLEADING and false.

Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is also a former governor of Kano State is widely recognised for his signature red cap, a symbol of the Kwankwasiyya movement. The red cap has become a strong identity marker for his followers and is consistently worn by Kwankwaso at public events and political gatherings.

On the other hand, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is known for his trademark cap featuring the “broken chain” or “infinity” insignia. His supporters often adorn caps with this distinctive symbol as a show of loyalty.

Recently, there have been persistent rumours that Kwankwaso is considering defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) amid a leadership crisis within the NNPP. These speculations have fuelled the spread of misleading content online.

The FactCheckHub subjected keyframes from the viral image to a Google Reverse Image Search. Results show that the original version of the photo was first published on the official Facebook page of the NNPP on November 8, 2022.

Screenshot of NNPP’s post in 2022

The original picture was taken at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State when Kwankwaso was received by party supporters.

In the authentic image, Kwankwaso was wearing the signature red cap of the Kwankwasiyya movement, not a cap bearing Tinubu’s insignia.

This indicates that the viral picture was digitally manipulated to create the false impression that Kwankwaso was wearing a Tinubu-branded cap.

As of the time of filing this fact check, there is no credible media report or official statement from Kwankwaso or his team suggesting that he has detected to APC.

THE VERDICT

The claim that Rabiu Kwankwaso wore a cap bearing President Bola Tinubu’s insignia and defected to APC is MISLEADING and false; the image was digitally altered.

A claim alleging that Donald Trump made remarks about Bola Tinubu’s presidency and the Nigerian elections has surfaced online.

The claim originated from a Facebook post by a page called Express, which identifies as a media company on the platform.

Clicking on this message triggered pop-ups and ads an indication of a browser hijacker malware often used to scam users through deceptive sites.

A keyword search using phrases from the post did not results in any news reports as such would be widely reported by local and international media outfits.

Instead it led our researcher to multiple reposts of the same claim, as well as unrelated news reports concerning recent court rulings on Tinubu’s drug-related records.

One of the reports found was from the State House, detailing a recent meeting in Paris where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received Mr. Massad Boulos, a Senior Advisor for Africa from former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.

The discussion centered on establishing a strategic economic and security partnership between Nigeria, Africa, and the United States, built on mutual respect, prosperity, and regional stability which was also reported by Punch Newspapers.

THE VERDICT

The claim that Donald Trump does not recognise Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s president is false; as there are no credible reports to support the statement as such would have been widely reported by media outlets.

CLAIM

Edo State paid ₦6 billion in compensation to Northerners and handed over 16 vigilantes following the Uromi killings.

THE FINDINGS

An investigation by The FactCheckHub shows that this claim is FALSE.

X post retrieved Online Inserted FALSE VERDICT

On March 28, 2025, 16 Northern Nigerian travellers, mostly Hausa hunters, were lynched in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. The group was traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for Eid celebrations when local vigilantes and members of the Edo State Security Network intercepted them at Udune Efandion, suspecting them due to the presence of hunting rifles in their vehicle. A mob attack ensued, leading to the deaths

The incident sparked widespread displeasure across the country. President Bola Tinubu condemned the killings as “dastardly” and called for immediate action from security agencies. Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo described the act as “barbaric” and ordered a full investigation. Police confirmed the attack and said over 30 suspects had been arrested.

After reviewing available reports, from a keyword search conducted by our researcher, there is no credible evidence to support the claim that the Edo State Government paid ₦6 billion in compensation to northern Nigerians or handed over 16 vigilantes following the Uromi killings.

However,  Okpebholo did pledge to compensate the families of the 16 victims during a condolence visit to Kano State. However, the exact amount of compensation was not specified in the reports.

Our check regarding the vigilantes shows that the Edo State Government suspended all illegal vigilante groups operating in the state and the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps. Investigations are still ongoing, with 14 suspects arrested in connection with the incident according to media report from Vanguard and Punch.

When contacted by The FactCheckHub, Fred Itua, spokesperson for the Edo State Governor, debunked the viral claim, No such development had occurred.

He said: “If such a development had occurred, the information would be publicly available. Besides, how much is the state’s entire budget for someone to claim that ₦6 billion has already been paid out?”

Itua added that the progress made so far is the submission of reports by a joint settlement committee set up by both the federal and state governments.

Appearance of the claim on Facebook; Insert MISLEADING verdict

When we conducted a keyword search with the words “Daily Post Jonathan Tinubu Win 2027 election” findings showed that the Daily Post, the news outlet referenced in the viral image, did not publish any article making such a claim.

A thorough search of its official website on the said date returned no results supporting the alleged statement attributed to Jonathan.

Moreover, discrepancies in the image’s size and font observed by The FactCheckHub and compared to the Daily Post’s standard format suggest it was digitally altered or a manipulated headline

Additional findings confirmed that Goodluck Jonathan was indeed in South Korea last week, where he received the Sunhak Peace Prize at an official ceremony in Seoul.

Announcing the award on Friday, April 11 2025 via his X page, the former president described it as a recognition not just of his efforts, but also of the dedication of Nigerians and Africans who are committed to promoting peace and development.

This was widely reported by media outfits and no comments of him endorsing Tinubu was found in the reports or in the posts made on X.

The FactCheckHub conducted a keyword search using the terms “News Agency of Nigeria Jonathan Tinubu will win 2027 election” as referenced by the claimant in the post, but the results only led to more instances of the same viral content.

Additionally, the claim has been refuted by Goodluck Jonathan’s media aide. In a statement, the former president’s Special Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, dismissed the online report as false.

This is fake news fabricated by agents of disinformation. At no point did Dr. Jonathan speak to any journalist on the forthcoming 2027 elections,” the statement read.

THE VERDICT

The claim that Goodluck Jonathan endorsed Bola Tinubu for the 2027 elections is FALSE; the headline circulating online was doctored, and although the former president was in Seoul to receive an honorary award, he made no such statement.

Does swallowing semen offer health benefits to women?

0

A claim suggesting that semen offers various health benefits has been making the rounds on TikTok.

In a video shared by the user @comicfreak, he referenced and reacted to another user’s video that promoted this claim.

In his video, @comicfreak argued that the woman’s claims were false and misleading, labelling them as misinformation. However, he did not provide any scientific evidence or health-based facts to debunk her assertions.

READ: Can ulcer be cured with honey, milk and citrus mixtures?

The FactCheckHub traced the original video, where the woman claimed that semen has multiple health benefits. The video was posted by another user on the app by @abidemitemi1

In the 51-second clip, a woman dressed in medical scrubs is seen posing while various keywords and text flashes intermittently across the screen.

The texts on the screen read:

Surprising benefits of swallowing sperm in females… Semen helps you get better sleep… Semen is a natural anti-depressant drug… improve memories and gives you energy… packed of multivitamin that give you best appetites… a natural pain reliever… prevents morning sickness and helps you glow… it helps post menopause health bone.

Since the inception of the the video on March 13, 2025 it has garnered an impression of over 60,000 likes, 83,300 reposts and 2,151 comments.

Given the sensitive nature of the claim, The FactCheckHub decided to verify the accuracy of the claim.

CLAIM

Swallowing semen offers several health benefits to women.

THE FINDINGS

Findings by The FactCheckHub shows that the claim is MISLEADING!

Screenshot of the appearance of the claim on TikTok; Insert MISLEADING verdict

According to Healthline, a health and wellness information website notes that generally, the components found in semen are considered safe to ingest. However, in rare cases, some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to semen, a condition known as human seminal plasma hypersensitivity (HSP).

While semen is often thought to be high in protein, the amount is so minimal that one would need to consume large quantities—several gallons—to gain any meaningful nutritional benefit.

A report by Medical News notes that many of the nutritional claims surrounding semen are misleading. Given the small volume typically produced, it is highly unlikely that anyone would consume enough for it to offer any significant health benefits. Medical News also notes that there has been little research into the health benefits of swallowing semen.

Speaking with The FactCheckHub, Zuliah Abdulazeez, a medical officer that specialises in family and reproductive health at the University of Ilorin College of health sciences, highlights that there are no nutritional benefits for women as the body digests food ingested.

“No nutritional benefits as the body naturally digests its foods. There’s no harm if the partner is healthy and free from infections and infectious diseases,” Abdulazeez offered.

In addition to sperm, protein, and water, semen contains a range of other components, such as sugars (fructose and glucose), sodium citrate, zinc, chloride, calcium, lactic acid, magnesium, potassium, and urea.

Similarly to studies suggesting that semen may have natural antidepressant effects, some people believe it could also help relieve stress. This belief is linked to the presence of mood-enhancing hormones like oxytocin and progesterone, both of which are found in semen.

A notable 2002 study did suggest a potential link between semen exposure and improved mood, finding that women who had direct contact with semen reported fewer symptoms of depression. However, the study did not account for other possible factors influencing mood, such as the psychological effects of sexual activity itself.

READ: Claim that cure for hypertension has been found resurfaces online

Engaging in oral sex without using a barrier method of birth control can expose individuals to bacterial infections like gonorrhoea and chlamydia, which can affect the throat. Additionally, skin-to-skin contact during such activity can lead to the transmission of viral infections like herpes.

Since semen is a bodily fluid, it can also carry sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.

THE VERDICT

The claim that swallowing semen offers several health benefits to women is MISLEADING; while semen contains trace nutrients and hormones, health experts and medical sources agree there is no significant nutritional benefit to swallowing it, and doing so may carry risks of allergic reactions or sexually transmitted infections.
