How the FactCheckHub Forum Works

When you have a question, it could be a news report you have doubts about or an image or a video, you can ask a question using the "Question and Answer” categories.

For Example: "Is it true that Nigeria is ranked the 3rd most terrorised country in the world?"

Other members can reply to your question by providing possible answers with references and data where possible.

In addition, members can up vote or down vote a response.

You can also reply to a question by providing an answer.

The Factcheckhub moderators will suggest accurate answers from the members contributions or provide the answers.

The more your activity on the forum the higher your rating climb.

The objective is to crowdsource verification of claims in order to combat misinformation and disinformation.

 

The FactCheckHub Forum Classification and Usage

We have two forum categories on the FactCheckHub.

  1. Thoughts and Discussions
  2. Questions and Answers

Depending on the nature of what you want to share or what you want people to respond to, you can place them in the appropriate category. For example, if it’s a question you want to ask, under ‘Questions and Answers’ tab, just click ‘What is your question?’ then click ‘Ask a Question’.

If it’s a thought, opinion or trending topic you want to share, the appropriate category to click would be ‘Thoughts and Discussions’ followed by clicking ‘Share your thoughts’ then, ‘Add Topic’.

To find all of the available Questions and Answers, users can search on the ‘Questions and Answers’ forum to see a listing of topics in that forum. Similar steps can be taken for ‘Thoughts and Discussions’.

The FactCheckHub Forum Members (Users)

On forum page, you can see all members. This page is available under Members menu. This is a simple list of members with quick profile information, such as avatar, display name, posts, reputation, join date, etc…

NOTE: that only registered and logged in users can view forum members and their profiles.

Member Reputation / Rating

The Forum has a simple yet powerful user reputation system. It is based on number of posts. All members get rating badges and titles based on number of posts they make.

There are ten levels of User Ranks. Each level has its Reputation Title and Badge.

Member Account Page

On this subPage of Member Profile, users can edit profile information, change Avatar, Timezone and Signature. All data (except username) are available for managing here.

Member Activity Page

Here you can see member topics and posts. It’s planned to display as much as possible activity information.

Member Subscription Page

Member Subscription page is another subPage of Member Profile. This is designed to list member subscriptions to forums and topics.

New Topic / Question

We use the ‘Topic’ term for Thoughts and Discussions forum category while we use ‘Question’ term for Questions and Answers forum category.

Buttons to add a new topic/questions are located in forum pages, you should click on some forum title (link) and enter to the forum you want to open a discussion topic or ask a question.

Click on [Add Topic] button to start creating a new topic. It opens topic rich editor (TinyMCE).

‘Add Topic’ and ‘Ask a Question’ buttons are only available for all registered and logged in users and not guests.

 

Reply, Answer, Comment, Quote

Reply – is the regular reply to topic posts or to other replies

Answer – is a reply to Question which supposed to contain an answer (Questions and Answers forum category).

Comment – Use comments to ask for more information or suggest improvements. Avoid answering questions in comments (Q&A forum layout). 

Quote – this feature makes it easier to distinguish between quoted text and new reply – thus following the flow of conversation becomes easier. Quote inline (copy-paste multiquote) – You can also copy a part of text, paste in new reply editor, select and click on quote button (rich editor toolbar)

Add new post and quote buttons are only available for registered members and not guests.

Report a Post

If you receive an inappropriate message, see spam anywhere on the platform, or would like to report any member-created content, then you should use the Report abuse button under/above each post.

After you click the Report abuse button, you will be asked to state your reasons for reporting abuse. Forum admins will receive a message and then take a closer look at the situation.

Report post button is only available for registered users and not guests.

 

The FactCheckHub Forum / Topic Subscription

The FactCheckHub Forum Subscription

Subscribe for new topics – This allows you subscribe to new topics of certain forum.

In this case, you’ll be asked to confirm your subscription via email.

User clicks on “Confirm my subscription” link and starts getting new topic notification emails:

User can unsubscribe to the forum whenever he/she wants by clicking on Unsubscribe link.

Also you can unsubscribe using the Unsubscribe button located under the Forum title you’ve subscribed.

Topic Subscription

This is similar to Forum subscription. The only difference in Subscription buttons. You can find topic subscription button in topic page. Click on a topic title/link and find [Subscribe for new replies] link.

Another easy way to subscribe to own topic or to other topics is using Subscribe to this topic checkbox.

The FactCheckHub Forum / Topic RSS Feed

RSS (Rich Site Summary; originally RDF Site Summary; often called Really Simple Syndication) uses a family of standard web feed formats to publish frequently updated information: New topics in forums, new posts in topics. An RSS document (called “feed”, “web feed”,or “channel”) includes topic and post  titles/links/excerpt publishing date and author’s name.

RSS feeds enable publishers to syndicate data automatically. A standard XML file format ensures compatibility with many different machines/programs. RSS feeds also benefit users who want to receive timely updates from favorite forum or to aggregate data from many forums.

Subscribing to a forum RSS removes the need for the user to manually check the website for new topics and posts. Instead, their browser constantly monitors the site and informs the user of any updates. The browser can also be commanded to automatically download the new data for the user.

Like / Vote Up / Vote Down / Is Answer

The like button is a feature in forums where the user can express that they like, enjoy or support certain post. The forum displays the number and name of users who liked each post. This is a quantitative alternative to other methods of expressing reaction to content, like writing a reply text. Rather than posting “+1” or “Agreed”, users can use the Like button.

The like button is available in Thoughts and Discussions forum category.

In Questions and Answers forum category, the like/dislike button is presented as Vote Up and Vote Down buttons respectively; this helps to find the best answer in answers list.

The green icon under Vote Down button indicates the answer, which has been selected as favoured answer by question author. It also says this answer was helpful and the issue is resolved. This is an alternative to regular forum layouts’ Solved button.

Like and Vote buttons are only available to registered users and not guests.

Edit Topics and Posts

In case you need to change something in posted topic or reply you can use Edit button. This button is available for forum moderators.

Regular forum users are not allowed to edit own topics and posts. Only moderators can edit topics and posts.

File Attachments

Below the Topic/Post editor, you will find a button [Browse] – Attach file. Click the [Browse] button and locate the file. Once you have selected a file. This file will automatically be uploaded and attached to this topic/post once topic is submitted.

To include an image that is not uploaded as an attachment and is located on another website, you can do so by copying the full URL to the image, (not the page on which the image is located), and either in post content.

Who can attach a file?

Attach file button is only available for registered users and not guests.

Attached files are only available for view by registered users and not guests
